About you (step 1 of onboarding)
The first onboarding step. Tell Brev your name, job title, and field so it can tailor what you see when you arrive.
This is the first thing you'll see after signing up: a Set up Brev window with a progress bar across the top. The step is headed “Tell us about you”, and the progress bar calls it Your role. It asks three short questions, plus an optional photo, and lets Brev set sensible defaults for the rest of the experience.
What this step asks #
- Your picture: optional. See Adding a profile picture below.
- Name: one field for your full name. Brev saves the last word as your last name and the rest as your first name (a single-word name is saved as your first name), and uses it everywhere you appear in the workspace (avatars, mentions, owner badges).
- Job title: free text, e.g. Head of Marketing. Shown next to your name in some places.
- Select your field: pick one of Sales, Product, Marketing, Operations, Engineering, Leadership, Finance, Success, People, or Other. Click a selected field again to clear it. Brev's AI uses this to suggest goals that match your job.
- If your organization syncs your name or job title from its directory, the field arrives filled in and locked. A synced job title isn't required to continue, even when the directory has none. When only your first or only your last name is synced, the Name field splits into First name and Last name so you can fill in the other one.
Press Continue to save your answers and move on to your company.
When Continue stays greyed out #
Continue only becomes available once Name, a field and Job title (unless it is synced from your directory and locked) are filled in and nothing is flagged in red. The fields check what you type as you go:
- Name must be at least 2 characters or Name must be fewer than 100 characters: your name has to be 2 to 100 characters long.
- Please use only letters, spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes: names can't contain digits or symbols. Accented letters and periods (as in “Dr. Ann Lee”) are fine.
- Job title must be at least 2 characters or Job title must be fewer than 50 characters: your job title has to be 2 to 50 characters long.
An empty field shows no message; Continue simply stays unavailable until you fill it in.
Adding a profile picture #
The round avatar beside “Your picture” shows your initials until you add a photo. The hint under it gives the limits: a PNG or JPEG of up to 5MB, at least 128px by 128px.
- Open the Profile picture windowHover over the avatar and click it.
- Choose an imageDrop an image onto the window, or click it to browse for one. A file that is too large, too small, or not an image is turned away with a message saying why.
- Crop itIn Crop Your Image, adjust the circle over the part of the photo you want and press Apply Crop (or Cancel to pick again).
- SaveThe window shows Ready to upload with a preview. Press Save, or Choose Different Image to start over. The photo is saved straight away, not when you press Continue, and the badge preview picks it up.
To take the photo off again, press the trash button next to the avatar.
The badge preview #
On wide screens, a name badge on the right mirrors what you type: your name, job title, field, and profile photo update live. It sways gently as you type or pick a field, and gives a brief glow when you press Continue. The flourish never delays the next step. If your device is set to reduce motion, the badge stays still and skips the glow.
Why you can't skip it #
Brev needs your name and field to set up your workspace correctly. If either is missing, opening any page in Brev brings you back to onboarding until you finish this step. There isn't a skip option.
Moving between steps #
Onboarding has five steps, and the progress bar names the one you're on: Your role (this step), Your company, Connect your calendar, Add Brev Coworker, and All set. A few things are worth knowing about getting around:
- Back: every step after this one has a Back button beside Continue. It keeps what you've already entered.
- Your browser's Back button: the steps all happen in one window, so the address in your browser doesn't change as you move through them. Your browser's Back button leaves onboarding rather than going back a step; use the Back button in the window instead.
- Reloading: reloading, or opening onboarding again, takes you to the first required step you haven't finished (About you, then your company), or to the All set review once both are done. The calendar and Brev Coworker steps are optional, so a reload passes over them; use Back from the review to reach them.
- Links to a step: each step also has its own address (/onboarding/welcome, /onboarding/company, /onboarding/meeting-agent, /onboarding/connect-workspace, /onboarding/complete), which opens straight on that step. Older links still work: /onboarding/role opens onboarding where you left off, and /onboarding/connect-slack goes to the Add Brev Coworker step.
Changing this later #
You can update any of these later from Profile, or by reopening onboarding.
