Goal detail
The side panel, full-page view and /goals page for one goal: progress and check-ins, insights, alignment, milestones, actions, and how progress rolls up from sub-goals.
/goals/<uuid> (what Share > Copy link in the panel's ⋯ menu copies) opens the same content as a standalone page.Anatomy of the panel #
- Header: Open full page, the ⋯ menu, and Close panel. Below it, the goal's name.
- Details: Progress (the bar and status), Owner, Organization or Team, and Time period. A Project with its own dates also lists Start date and Due date. Below them sits the Description.
- Conflict warning: a small warning icon beside the status. Hover it (or tap on mobile) to see why. It appears when the latest automatic status differs from the last human check-in (Status conflict), or when a goal set to Manual Only check-ins still shows a status that its aligned goals rolled up into it. The automatic status and progress keep updating. A new human check-in clears it; for a Manual Only goal you can instead switch its tracking method to Children.
- Actions: a collapsible section listing the action items linked to this goal. Its + (Add action item) opens a row for a new action that is already linked to the goal. Hover a row (or right-click it) for its options: Status, Assignee, Link Goal, Link Meeting, Delete.
- Tabs: Progress (the default), Insights and Alignment.
- Progress tab: the progress chart with every check-in plotted against the expected pace, the Milestones list when your workspace uses milestones, a suggested check-in when Brev has drafted one, and the most recent check-ins. Check-in opens the check-in dialog for this goal.
- Insights tab: AI-generated Summary, Highlights, Blockers and Tactics, each showing the sources that fed it and when it was generated, with thumbs up / down to rate it and arrows to step back to older versions.
- Alignment tab: where the goal sits in the goal tree. See Alignment below.
Blockers #
Add Blocked by and Blocking links from a goal's three-dot menu. A goal can have any number of links in either direction. Click the circular indicators to change, reverse or remove links when you can edit the goal. Cycles are not allowed, and making an ancestor block a descendant asks for confirmation. An indicator turns red when the blocking goal is at risk (and glows, with a details banner) or yellow when it is behind. Links are visual only and remain after completion or archival. Deleting either goal removes the link for everyone. Private counterparts are unnamed.
The goal page #
The standalone page (and the full-page view) shows the same goal laid out wider:
- A breadcrumb whose first item links back to the view you came from (the Organization view when you arrived some other way), then the goal's ⋯ menu.
- A properties bar where editors can change the Scope and team, owner, status and time period in place. Removing the last owner is refused with a warning.
- On the left, the Insights and Alignment tabs (and, for a Metric or Project, its metric section above them).
- On the right, the Progress chart (with the coverage timeline for a parent that rolls up by time), the Milestones panel, the goal's action items, and the Check-ins card.
Check-in history in the panel #
In the side panel's Progress tab, a goal with no check-ins shows "Add your first check-in to start tracking progress." over the empty chart, with a Check-in button. Once there are check-ins, the list below the chart shows only a recent window, labelled with the shortest span that holds one (Last 7 days, Last 2 weeks, Last 30 days, Last 3 months or Last year). When older ones exist, a + N more checkins available button opens the full Checkins list inside the panel, with its own Add checkin button; the goal's name in the breadcrumb takes you back.
Alignment #
The Alignment tab shows the goals above this one (its parents, each up the chain) and, under Child Goals, the goals beneath it as a tree. Expand a child to see its own children, or use the button beside Child Goals to expand or collapse them all. A goal with no parent and no children shows "No alignment yet". To change where a goal sits, use Alignment in its ⋯ menu or the Parent pill in the edit dialog; to add one beneath it, use Add child.
Milestones #
When an admin turns on Milestones in Settings → Goals → Advanced features, a Milestones panel appears next to the progress chart on the goal page and in the panel's Progress tab. A milestone is a named checkpoint with a value and a date, drawn as a marker on the chart.
- Click the panel's + (Add milestone), type a name, a value and pick a date (it starts at the end of the goal's period), then save. The marker appears on the chart once the milestone is saved.
- Each milestone reads On track, Up to date or Overdue, depending on whether progress has reached its value by its date.
- Use a milestone's ⋯ menu to Edit or Delete it. Delete takes effect straight away, with no confirmation.
- Adding and changing milestones is for people who can edit the goal.
Tracking method #
The selector in the header of the goal page's Check-ins card (and next to Check-in in the panel) sets where the goal's progress comes from:
- Children
- Progress is calculated from child goals. Only available when the goal has children. Each check-in on a child adds an "Updated from children" entry to this goal's history.
- Integration Refresh
- Progress is updated from connected integrations. Only available when the goal tracks an integration.
- Manual Only
- Progress is updated manually, from your own check-ins. Not available on a goal that tracks an integration.
Until you choose, a goal that tracks an integration uses Integration Refresh, a Goal or Project with children uses Children, and everything else (including every Metric, children or not) uses Manual Only. The same choice appears in the goal dialog as the roll-up pill. Changing it needs permission to edit the goal.
How parent progress rolls up #
A parent goal on the Children tracking method calculates its progress from its children. By default Brev uses time-based coverage: each child counts in proportion to how much of the parent's time window it spans, and time no child covers counts as 0%. Your org can switch the default to equal weighting (every child counts the same, ignoring dates) in Product settings, and any individual goal can override the org default from its Roll-up basis pill in the edit dialog. That pill appears only while the dialog's roll-up pill is set to Children, and sits under the ... button when the options row has no room for it.
Adding a check-in #
On the goal page, click Add check-in in the Check-ins card (or choose Add check-in in the goal's ⋯ menu). In the side panel, use Check-in in the Progress tab, and in a list you can click the row's progress bar (see Checking in from a row). Each opens the same check-in dialog, titled with the goal's name and starting from its current progress and status. To update many goals at once, use My Check-ins.
- Set the progressType a percentage (or, for a Metric, the current value). A dotted marker on the bar shows the progress expected by today; hover it to see the number.
- Add contextWrite what changed in the 'Add context...' editor. It supports bold, italics, lists and links.
- Check the statusBrev picks a status from your progress: On Track at or above the expected progress, Behind up to 25 points below it, and At Risk further below. Pick a status yourself and Brev stops changing it as you edit the number.
- Click 'Add check-in'A 'Check-in added' toast confirms it, with View Check-in to jump to the goal (skipped when that goal's quick view is already open). The new entry tops the goal's check-in history and the chart gains a point.
- The dialog won't submit until you change something: with nothing changed it says "Update context, status, or progress to complete check-in." ("metric value" for a Metric) and disables the button.
- A metric value keeps up to 6 decimal places; extra decimals are rounded, and the dialog tells you so. A value too large to store is refused with the range you can use.
- Who can check in is wider than who can edit: owners, people and teams the goal is shared with, Team Admins of its team and Org Admins can all add check-ins. See Roles & permissions.
Completing and scoring a goal #
Choose Completed as the status, or enter 100%, and a score pill appears (0.0 to 1.0). The button changes to Score goal, which asks you to confirm in a Score this goal? dialog, because a scored goal's status can't be changed again. The history then shows the entry as scored, with the score on its Completed badge, and the goal leaves your Check In list. Picking a different status on a completed goal later only shows a notice. Editing that check-in lets you change the score (the button reads Update score).
Unsaved check-ins are kept as drafts #
While you type a new check-in, Brev saves what you've entered in this browser. Close the dialog (or reload the page) and the next time you open Add check-in for that goal it comes back, with an amber Draft badge next to the goal's name. Submitting clears it. Drafts stay in the browser where you typed them, so they don't follow you to another device, and editing an existing check-in doesn't make one.
The check-in history #
The goal page's Check-ins card lists check-ins newest first and shows three at a time; Show N more reveals the rest. Each entry shows who checked in and when, how much progress changed, any status change, and the note. Entries written by the Children tracking method read "Updated from children", and ones from an integration read "Integrated check-in".
A check-in written from outside the Brev app says where it came from after the author's name: "via Claude" or "via ChatGPT" for those apps' Brev connectors, "via MCP" for other AI tools (Claude Code included), "via CLI" for the brev command line, "via API" for a direct API call, and "via Brev" when you asked Brev's Operator to post it. The same label appears in the status popover and on the member's profile. Check-ins written in the app, from Slack or Teams, or before this label existed show none.
Each entry in the check-in history names who wrote it. A check-in Brev posted on its own, rather than one you wrote or an AI draft you accepted, is labelled Written by Brev instead of showing a person's name and avatar, and it doesn't count toward your check-in streak or stop the goal appearing on your Check In list. You still owe that goal an update.
Commenting on a check-in #
- The newest check-in always has a Write a comment... box under it. Press Enter to post, or Shift+Enter for a new line. Anyone who can see the goal can comment.
- Older check-ins show Reply (or the number of replies) instead; click it to open the thread and a comment box.
- On the newest check-in, a button naming the count, such as 2 comments, shows the thread and Hide comments hides it.
- Comments read oldest first. A thread of five or more opens with the first two and a Show N more replies link.
- A link to a particular check-in (for example from a notification) opens that check-in's thread on the goal page.
Reacting to a check-in #
- Click the smiley icon under any check-in and pick an emoji to react to it. Anyone who can see the goal can react.
- To react to a comment under a check-in, hover the comment and click its smiley icon.
- Reactions show as small counts. Click one to add or remove your own, and hover it to see who reacted.
- The person who wrote the check-in or comment gets a card in their Inbox. Reacting to your own sends nothing.
AI insights and suggested check-ins #
If Suggested Check-ins is enabled in Product settings, Brev pre-drafts a check-in for you using signal from meeting transcripts and integrations. It appears as a Suggested check-in card at the top of the goal's check-ins. Expand it to accept it as it is, dismiss it, or open it in the check-in dialog to edit before you submit. The Insights tab shows Brev's Summary, Highlights, Blockers and Tactics for the goal; insights come from check-ins and from meetings Brev's meeting agent joins.
Editing or deleting a goal #
Open the goal's ⋯ menu (in the panel header, on the goal page, or on its row in any goal table): Edit Goal opens the same dialog as creation pre-filled with current values, and Update Goal saves it; Archive Goal hides it from every view, reversibly (with an option to archive its sub-goals too); Delete Goal removes it permanently after you confirm. On a Metric or Project the items say Metric or Project. If Brev can't save the delete, the goal comes back with an error so you can try again. If you deleted it from the goal's own page, Brev takes you back to the goals view you came from. If an edit moves the goal outside the view's filters, a toast says it's no longer visible there.
To change a few words, edit in place instead. In the goal panel, click the goal's name or description (or Add a description when it has none). In a goal table, double-click the goal's name, since a single click opens the panel. Click away to save, or press Escape to discard. In the name, Enter also saves. The description is formatted text, so Enter starts a new line or list item there and Cmd+Enter (Ctrl+Enter on Windows) saves. A name can't be left empty. Inline editing only appears on goals you can edit.
If Brev refuses an edit you made to a goal, for example a Project date your workspace has not enabled, a message says so and why, and the goal goes back to the way it is saved. Later edits that are allowed save normally. If Brev can't read the saved goal back, you only get the message. An edit to a goal that was deleted or stopped being shared with you in the meantime is dropped without a message, and the goal leaves your view.
