How to sign in to Brev: with an emailed code, with Google or Microsoft, or with your company's SSO, plus what to do when sign-in doesn't work.
Known issue: if you cancel on the Google or Microsoft screen (or your admin blocks the app) partway through signing in from an invitation, the sign-in page you return to can forget the invitation. Open the invitation link from your email again and sign in with the emailed code.
Ways to sign in #
- Emailed code: the default, and the big button on the page. Type your work email, click Email me a sign-in code, and Brev emails you a 6-digit code. Type it into the code box that appears and click Verify code. There's no password to remember or reset. A wrong or already-used code shows "Invalid email or code.", and Use a different email takes you back to the email step. See Your sign-in code if the email doesn't arrive.
- Continue with Google: one click if your work account is on Google Workspace.
- Continue with Microsoft: the same, for a work or school account on Microsoft 365.
- Single sign-on (SSO): if your company set up SAML or OIDC, an SSO button (for example "Continue with Okta SSO") appears above the email field as soon as Brev recognizes your email domain, with the note "Your organization supports SSO sign-in." Both stay available: pick SSO and you're handed off to your identity provider and brought back here once you're signed in. If your organization's policy requires SSO, entering an emailed code is refused with "Your organization requires SSO. Please use the SSO option above to sign in." and you're returned to the SSO button. If you belong to more than one organization and the one you last used requires SSO, signing in another way (an emailed code, Google or Microsoft) takes you straight to that organization's SSO sign-in instead.
Brev remembers the last email you asked for a code with on this browser and fills it in next time. To sign in as someone else, click Use a different account under the sign-in buttons.
Extra verification steps #
Some organizations ask for more than the sign-in code. When that applies to you, Brev shows one or two extra steps on the same card, right after your emailed code is accepted, while signing in or signing up:
- Confirm your email
- The card reads "We sent a verification code to" your address. Enter the 6-digit code from that email and click Verify email.
- Authenticator code
- If your account already uses an authenticator app, the card reads "Enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app." Type the current code and click Verify.
- Set up an authenticator app
- If your organization requires two-step verification and you haven't set it up, Brev shows a QR code: "Scan this QR code with your authenticator app, then enter the 6-digit code below." Scan it with an app such as Google Authenticator or 1Password, type the code it shows, and click Verify and continue. Can't scan? Open "Can't scan? Enter this key manually" and type the key into your app instead.
A wrong code shows the reason in red and lets you try again. If the card says your session has expired, go back to the sign-in page and start again. Once the step is done you land where you were heading: the page you opened, your Organization view, or setup for a new account.
Staying signed in #
Brev renews your sign-in quietly in the background, so a tab you leave open keeps working when you come back to it, without a trip to the sign-in page. To sign out yourself, choose Log out from the account menu: Brev signs this browser out and returns you to the sign-in page.
If an open tab finds that your sign-in has ended (for example, you logged out in another tab), it reloads itself. If you're still signed in with your provider this is a brief flash; otherwise you land on the sign-in page and come back to the same page once you sign in. When several Brev tabs notice at once, only one reloads, and the others pick up the renewed sign-in on their own.
If a tab can't reload itself (another tab just tried), an amber bar across the top reads "Your session has expired, so this page is no longer receiving updates. Sign in again to continue." Click Sign in again to reload the page and sign back in. Until you do, that tab shows what it had but doesn't get new changes.
If you see "Account Deactivated" #
If an admin turns off your access to the workspace you're in, Brev shows a page titled "Account Deactivated" instead of the app: "Your account has been deactivated. Contact [email protected] to learn more." Nothing else in that workspace is available to you.
- Ask an admin of that workspace to reactivate you. They do it from Members, on the Inactive tab. Signing in again on its own won't bring access back.
- Click Log out on that page to sign out, for example to sign in with a different account.
- This page shows even when that workspace was the only one you belonged to. Ask an admin there to reactivate you.
If sign-in doesn't work #
Some problems show in red right under the email field as you sign in:
- "Please use your work email to continue. Personal email addresses are not supported."
- You used a personal email account like Gmail or Outlook. Brev is built for teams, so accounts use a work address. Use your company email instead.
- "This email address isn't supported. Please use a permanent work email to continue."
- The address is from a disposable email service (Mailinator and similar). Use a permanent work email.
- "Invalid email or code."
- The code was mistyped, has expired, or was already used. Check the newest email, or go back and request a fresh code.
- "We couldn't send a code to that address. Its domain doesn't accept email. Check the address for a typo."
- The part after the @ can't receive email. Correct the address and try again.
- "Too many attempts. Please try again later."
- Wait a few minutes before requesting or entering another code.
- "We couldn't sign you in right now."
- Brev's sign-in protection stopped the attempt. If you believe it's a mistake, click Contact support under the message: it includes a reference code that helps support find the attempt.
Others arrive as a banner at the top of the sign-in page, usually after a Google, Microsoft, or SSO attempt:
- "Use your work email to continue"
- The Google, Microsoft, or Slack account you picked uses a personal email address. Sign in with your work account instead.
- "This email address isn't supported. Please use a permanent work email."
- The account you signed in with uses a disposable email address. Use a permanent work email.
- "We couldn't confirm your email address with your sign-in provider. Use the emailed sign-in code instead."
- Your sign-in provider handed Brev an email address it hadn't verified, so Brev won't attach that sign-in to an account. Sign in with the emailed code instead. Entering it proves you own the address.
- "Sign-in with Google, Microsoft, or Slack didn't finish."
- You cancelled or went back on the Google, Microsoft, or Slack screen, or your organization's admin blocks apps it hasn't approved (Google shows "Access blocked"). Try again, or sign in with the emailed code. If your admin blocks the app, ask them to approve Brev.
- "Your organization needs an admin to approve Brev before you can sign in with Microsoft."
- Your Microsoft organization only lets an admin grant apps access. Sign in with the emailed code, or ask your admin to approve Brev for your organization.
- "Your organization signs in with SSO. Enter your work email below to continue."
- Your company requires single sign-on for your email domain, so Google, Microsoft, and Slack sign-in are refused. Type your work email and pick the SSO button that appears.
- "We couldn't complete sign in. Please try again, or contact support if this continues."
- Something unexpected stopped the sign-in. Try again; if it happens twice in a row, contact support.
- "This invitation was sent to a different email address."
- You opened an invitation link while signed in as someone else, so Brev signed you out. Open the invitation link again and sign in with the address it was sent to.
- "This invitation has expired." or "This invitation has been revoked."
- The invitation can no longer be accepted: invitations expire after 7 days, and the team that sent it can withdraw it. Ask them to send a new one.
- "We couldn't accept this invitation."
- Something went wrong on Brev's side while answering the invitation. Try the link again, or email [email protected] with the address you were invited at.
- "We couldn't finish setting up your account."
- Your sign-in worked, but Brev couldn't finish creating your account or workspace after several tries. Email [email protected] and we'll get you in. See Setting up your account.
Known issue: the invitation and account-setup messages above are shown after Brev signs you out, and right now the sign-in page opens without the banner. If you were just signed out after opening an invitation link, the causes above still apply.
