Creating & Managing Time Periods

Custom time periods let you organize goals and reporting around your business cadence — months, quarters, halves, years, or multi-year missions.

Admins and Owners can create and manage time periods in Brev. The Current time period is an organization-wide setting — it shapes everyone's experience in Brev.

End of the quarter or year? It's time to roll your time periods forward. Skip to Making a time period "Current" near the bottom of this article.

Default time periods in Brev

Brev builds an annual and quarterly cadence for you automatically. Your organization starts with four quarters and two annual time periods, anchored to the date you created your Brev organization. The quarter and year that contain your creation date are set as Current.

Create a new time period

  1. Go to Settings → Product → Date & Time.

2. Click the + button.

3. Enter the details:

  • Name (e.g., Q1 2026, H2 2025, FY 2026)

  • Start date

  • End date

4. Set the period as Past, Current, or Next.

5. Click Create Time Period.

Tips

  • Use consistent naming so periods sort cleanly (e.g., Q1 26, not 2026 Q1).

  • Don't let periods overlap unless you mean to (e.g., Q1 2026 nested inside FY 2026).

Success check: Your new period shows up as an option when creating or filtering goals.

Time periods are flexible (and so is alignment)

Create any custom time period to track goals — months, quarters, trimesters, halves, annual, 3-year, 5-year. Just set a start and end date.

Benefit: Expected progress spans the full duration of your period, and aligned child goals on different time periods map accordingly.

Ambitious, multi-year goals? Create a "3-year mission" period, align your annual goals to it, and align your quarterly goals to your annual goals.

Making a time period "Current"

When the quarter or year turns, Brev waits for you to tell it the cadence is rolling over. Admins can switch it in a few clicks:

  1. Go to Settings → Product → Date & Time.

  2. Click the pencil to edit the time period.

  3. Set its status to Current.

  4. Click Update Time Period.

  5. Do the same for your annual period if a new year is starting.

  6. Set any previous period(s) to Past.

What does a "Current" time period do?

These Brev experiences key off whether a period is Current, Past, or Next:

  • Dashboard Views

  • Creating Goals, Metrics, and Projects

  • Suggesting Goals (Goal Coach)

  • Other UX experiences

Once you've finished scoring and reflecting on the prior quarter, we recommend setting your new period to Current right away.

What do the colors and icons mean?

  • Green = the current period
