Summary
Learn how to create Objectives and Goals in Brev — the foundation of your team's goal-setting practice. This article walks through every field and option so your goals are clear, measurable, and ready to track.
Why This Matters
Goals without structure are just wishes. Brev's goal creation flow forces the right questions upfront — who owns it, what does success look like, and when does it close — so nothing falls through the cracks come review time.
Whether you're setting company-level OKRs or a team-specific initiative, the process is the same. Start here.
Creating an Objective
An Objective is a qualitative, aspirational statement — the "what" you're trying to achieve. Key Results and Metrics live under it.
1. Click + New Goal in the top-right corner.
2. Select Objective as the goal type.
3. Fill in the required fields:
Title — Keep it short and outcome-focused. "Become the #1 tool for ops teams" beats "Improve product."
Owner — The person accountable. One owner; others can be contributors.
Time period — Quarter, half-year, or custom date range. Brev uses this for progress tracking and cadence.
Team / Group — Which team this Objective belongs to.
1. Optional but recommended:
Description — Context for why this matters. One or two sentences max.
Parent goal — If this Objective rolls up to a company-level goal, link it here.
1. Click Create.
Your Objective now appears in the Goals view. It starts at 0% progress until you add Key Results or Metrics beneath it.
Creating a Metric (Key Result or Standalone)
A Metric in Brev typically functions as a Key Result — a measurable outcome that proves progress on an Objective.
1. From the Goals view, click the Objective you want to add a Key Result to.
2. Click + Add Key Result (or + Add Goal at the top level for standalone goals).
3. Choose the goal type:
4. Enter a Title, Owner, and Target (what does "done" look like?).
5. Set a Start value and Target value for numeric goals.
6. Click Create.
Pro tip: Write Key Results as outcomes, not activities. "Increase MRR from $400K to $500K" is a strong Key Result. "Run pricing experiments" is an activity — it belongs in Actions, not Goals.

What Happens After You Create a Goal
Once a goal is created, Brev's AI features activate:
Goal Coach reviews the quality of your writing and suggests improvements
Check-in reminders are scheduled based on the time period
The goal appears in your KPI Dashboard (for Metrics) and Goals view
⚠️ Note: Goals without an owner won't surface in personal dashboards or trigger check-in reminders. Always assign an owner.
